The Moderate Youth League (Sweden) and Youth of the National Coalition Party (Finland) demand that the Finnish and Swedish governments finally realise the geopolitical stance of the countries and join the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). Our organisations remind that Russia is also a threat to Finland and Sweden, and Russian President Vladimir Putin has shown that he is not afraid to take illegal military actions to achieve his goals.

Putin ordered a full scale invasion of Ukraine in the early hours on Thursday February 24th, followed by an escalation of illegal Russian operations and military attacks. The Moderate Youth League and Youth of the National Coalition Party condemn actions taken by the Russian Federation in the strongest possible terms.

Our organisations have supported NATO membership for Sweden and Finland for a long time, but due to recent events, it has become more pressing than ever. In his speech, Putin questioned the sovereignty of Ukraine linking it to the former territories of imperial Russia. There is no guarantee that the same does not happen to Finland.

Sweden holds territory that could be vital to allow NATO forces to support the Baltic states and Finland in the case of a wider conflict. Without Swedish cooperation, the security of other countries could be put at risk. Likewise, an armed conflict in the Baltic Sea region would inevitably become a threat to Sweden, as the success of any military action taken would depend on control of Swedish territory, such as the island of Gotland located in the Baltic Sea.

Finland is the only western non-NATO neighbour of Russia that they have not yet invaded. It should be clear by now that the best way to defend Finland against Putin’s Russia is by joining NATO, and it seems like most of the Finns are of the same opinion. A recent poll by the Finnish Broadcasting Company also shows that a clear majority of Finns think that Finland should join NATO.

We want to emphasise that Finland and Sweden share a long tradition of cooperation in critical foreign policy decisions. For example, the countries applied for EU membership together. It would be natural if the countries also applied for NATO membership together. A joint application would also make it easier to have security guarantees from NATO while the membership applications are pending approval from the North Atlantic Council.

Finland and Sweden are irrevocably Western countries. NATO is and has been the only defence alliance of the West ever since World War II, and it would be irresponsible not to apply for membership.

The Moderate Youth League and Youth of the National Coalition Party demand that the governments of Finland and Sweden start the membership process immediately and that the prime ministers actively take steps to advance the countries accession to NATO.

Mieluummin sisällä kuin ulkona – Suomen ja Ruotsin on liityttävä yhdessä Natoon!

Moderata Ungdomsförbundet (Ruotsi) ja Kokoomusnuoret vaativat Suomen ja Ruotsin hallituksia viimein ymmärtämään maiden geopoliittisen aseman ja liittymään Pohjois-Atlantin liittoon (Nato). Järjestömme muistuttavat Venäjän olevan uhka myös Suomelle ja Ruotsille, ja Venäjän presidentti Vladimir Putin on osoittanut, ettei hän pelkää ryhtyä laittomiin sotatoimiin tavoitteidensa saavuttamiseksi.

Putin määräsi täysimittaisen hyökkäyksen Ukrainaan varhain torstaina 24. maaliskuuta, mitä seurasi Venäjän laittoman sotilasoperaation laajeneminen. Moderata Ungdomsförbundet ja Kokoomusnuoret tuomitsevat Venäjän federaation toimet mitä jyrkimmin.

Järjestömme ovat kannattaneet Suomen ja Ruotsin Nato-jäsenyyttä jo kauan, mutta viimeaikaisten tapahtumien vuoksi jäsenhakemus on kiireisempi kuin koskaan. Puheessaan Putin kyseenalaisti Ukrainan suvereniteetin yhdistämällä sen entisiin keisarillisen Venäjän alueisiin. Ei ole mitään takeita siitä, ettei sama kävisi myös Suomelle.

Ruotsilla on alueita, jotka voivat olla Natolle elintärkeitä Baltian maiden ja Suomen tukemiseksi laajemmassa konfliktissa. Ilman Ruotsin yhteistyötä muiden maiden turvallisuus voisi olla uhattuna. Samoin aseellinen konflikti Itämeren alueella olisi väistämättä uhka myös Ruotsille, koska sotatoimien onnistuminen riippuisi Ruotsin alueiden, kuten Itämerellä sijaitsevan Gotlannin, hallinnasta.

Suomi on Venäjän ainoa Natoon kuulumaton naapuri, johon se ei ole vielä hyökännyt. Nyt viimeistään pitäisi olla päivänselvää, että paras tapa puolustaa Suomen Putinin Venäjältä on liittyä Natoon ja myös suurin osa suomalaisista näyttäisi olevan samaa mieltä. Yleisradion äskettäin toteuttaman kyselyn mukaan selvä enemmistö suomalaisista nimittäin kannattaa Suomen Nato-jäsenyyttä.

Haluamme korostaa sitä, että Suomella ja Ruotsilla on pitkä perinne yhteistyöstä kriittisissä ulkopoliittisissa päätöksissä. Maat esimerkiksi hakivat Euroopan unionin jäsenyyttä yhdessä. Olisikin siis luonnollista seuraavaksi hakea Nato-jäsenyyttä yhdessä. Yhteinen hakemus helpottaisi myös turvatakuiden saamista Natolta, kun jäsenhakemukset odottavat Pohjois-Atlantin neuvoston hyväksyntää.

Suomi ja Ruotsi ovat vääjäämättä länsimaita. Nato on ollut ja on lännen ainoa puolustusliitto toisen maailmansodan jälkeen, ja olisi vastuutonta olla hakematta jäsenyyttä.

Moderata Ungdomsförbundet ja Kokoomusnuoret vaativat, että Suomen ja Ruotsin hallitukset aloittavat jäsenyysprosessin välittömästi ja että maiden pääministerit edistävät aktiivisesti maiden liittymistä Naton jäseniksi.
